Mehrangarh Fort was founded by Rao Jodha in 1459, the same year he established the city of Jodhpur. Legend has it that to build the fort, a hermit living on the hill—Cheeria Nathji—had to be relocated, leading to a curse of drought upon the kingdom. To appease the spirits and lift the curse, a man was buried alive in the foundation, a sacrifice still honored in the fort’s folklore

One of the largest and most impressive forts in India, Mehrangarh is not just a monument—it’s a living chronicle of centuries of Rajput valor, art, and culture.

The fort has seven gates, including the main entrance, Jai Pol (victory gate) built by Maharaja Man Singh to commemorate his victories over the Jaipur and Bikaner armies in 1806. The Fattehpol commemorates the victory of Maharaja Ajit Singh over the Mughals. Mehrangarh Fort was one of the finest architecture in India

Within its boundaries are several palaces known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards, a Chamunda Mataji Temple, as well as a museum that houses various relics. A winding road leads to and from the city below. The imprints of the impact of cannonballs fired by the attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate. At the north-east of the fort is the chhatri of Kirat Singh Sodha, a soldier who fell on the spot defending Mehrangarh

Some of the notable festivals taking place here include the World Sacred Spirit Festival and the Rajasthan International Folk Festival.

Inside, the palaces are a visual feast. Highlights include:

Sheesh Mahal

Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace): Dazzling with mirror work that reflects light into thousands of tiny sparkles.

Phool Mahal

Phool Mahal (Flower Palace): Once a royal pleasure chamber, richly decorated with gold filigree and intricate frescoes.

Moti Mahal

Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace): Known for its unique windows and royal throne, where the king held his court.

Mehrangarh’s museum

Mehrangarh’s museum is one of the best-preserved in India, displaying a fascinating collection of artifacts—from royal cradles and costumes to weapons and paintings. The collection of palanquins and elephant howdahs gives a vivid glimpse into royal transport of the past.

Chamunda Mataji Temple

The serene Chamunda Mataji Temple within the fort complex adds a spiritual dimension to the experience, attracting pilgrims and devotees throughout the year.

The fort also hosts festivals such as the Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF) and World Sacred Spirit Festival, turning its ancient courtyards into vibrant stages of music and culture.
One of the most rewarding aspects of a visit to Mehrangarh is the panoramic view of the “Blue City” below—Jodhpur’s old town, painted in hues of indigo
