History of Sabarmati Ashram

Sabarmati Ashram also is known as Gandhi ashram. It is located on the banks of the River Sabarmati currently riverfront in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This was one of the many residences of Mahatma Gandhi who lived at Sabarmati and Sevagram. He stayed in Sabarmati and Wardha for a total of twelve years along with his wife Kasturba Gandhi and followers including Vinoba Bhave.

It is also famous that Gandhi led the Dandi march also known as the Salt Satyagraha on 12 March 1930. Further In recognition of the important influence that this march had on the Indian independence movement. Because of its significance, the Indian government has established the ashram as a national monument.

About Sabarmati Ashram

When you do entry inside the Sabarmati Ashram, the left side has a big museum, Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya. The Gandhi Ji resides in a cottage named Hridaya Kunj that is Gandhi ji own cottage in the ashram. Then in 1963, having been designed by the architect Charles Correa, the museum was built. Then further the Sangrahalaya was re-located into the well-designed and well-furnished museum building and was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister of India on 10 May 1963. Memorial activities could then continue.

If you are looking for some cool place and peace of mind then the ashram is worth a place to visit. As the ashram consists of nature, museum, and monuments and situated on the beautiful banks of River Sabarmati that gives us an amazing feeling and keeps us cool and calm. Spending a day there memorizing the struggles of his work for our country makes us feel proud to be an Indian.

Gandhi Ji Own Cottage

The ashram has a cottage where Mahatma Gandhi used to live when he was in Ahmedabad. The house has a hall (angan) where there are many plants at the entry. The house had 4 rooms, the first room was locked by the government. Next to it a kitchen where there were some vessels and other material kept on the other side some original things of Gandhi ji like there wooden walking stick & charkha etc. are kept.  Next to the kitchen was the hall (angan). Currently, the main entrance of the house is from the hall ( angan ) near the hall there is Gandhi’s room where there were a charkha and bed are lying it is locked and you can watch the whole room by the steel net.  Next to the right, there is Kasturba’s room where some information was written about Kasturba next to it was a guest room.
