When you visit unexplored historical places, it will give you immense pleasure. The Chaskar Wada is one of the unexplored historical places near Pune. The Chaskar Wada is the home to Kashi Bai, the first wife of Shri Mant Bajirao Ballal Bhat Pratham. Shri Mant Bajirao Pratham was a great 7th Peshawa during Chatrapati Sahu Maharaja’s reign in Maratha Empire.
About Chaskar Wada
The Chaskar Wada ( Home is called Wada in the Marathi Language) is a big haveli almost 280 years old. The main entrance has a portico with a big Door (Darwaza). The door has big nails to protect it from enemies. Inside the portico, both sides have a security cabin. After the portico, there is a big courtyard. The old weapon like a small canon was lying here and there. The predecessor residence structure was still initial time, the earlier wall was made from sand now these are brick walls.
Currently, the ancestors of Kasi Bai’s 10th generation staying in Chaskar Wada. Here I met with Mr. Vitthal Joshi. It was a warm welcome when I entered Chaskar Wada. Vitthal Ji has shown us 1000 year old brass elephant Murti. Despite being hollow, it was very heavy and it can be easily dismantled and assembled. He has explained to us the great history of the Kashibai Family.
History of the Kashi Bai Family
Our native is Talsoor in the Konkan region. In the era of Chatrapati Sivaji Maharaja, our ancestors came to this pargana (province) while fighting battles for swarajya they settled here in Chas village. Our ancestors became vatandar (landowners) of this region.
Kashibai’s father built this mansion ( Wada). Kashibai’s uncle was staying in Kalyan (near Thane) and Kashibai used to stay at his uncle’s house in Kalyan. Joshi-Chaskar (our ancestors) proposed Bajirao’s name for the Peshwa position to Shahu Maharaj. Then Shahu Maharaj ordered us to get Kashibai to marry Bajirao.
We used to be bankers of Peshwa’s. Peshwa’s used to get finance from us, after the war they used to return our borrowings. As Shahaji Maharaj had respect and fame in Adilshaha and Nijamshaha darbar ( court), we also had the same respect in Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj darbar. The reason behind this marriage was Bajirao will get the strong support of our ancestors. In 1711 Kashibai and Bajirao Peshwa got married at Kalyan that time Kashibai was 7 and Bajirao was of 11 years.
Peshwas had only 2500 Rs that time while our ancestors spent 25000 Rs for weddings. It was a huge amount. We are staying here from that time. My generation is 10th, I have a son and a grandson. This mansion is almost 280 yrs old. We feel proud about this glorious history.
Mastani and Kashibai never stayed together. Mastani was never allowed in Shaniwarwada. Bajirao had built a bungalow for her in Kothrud and he used to go there. However, after the death of Mastani, Kashibai raised Mastani’s son as like own son.
We completely disagree and are unhappy with the movie Mastani – Bajirao, which is not real history. No one has discussed with us or even no one seeks our thoughts even during the inauguration of the Bajirao Peshwa statue we were not invited, Mastani’s successors were invited.
