Mahadji Shinde Chhatri

Mahadji Shinde Chhatri at Wanwadi is a Marveles monument in Pune, India  Shinde Chhatri is a memorial built in memory of Mahadji Shinde a great warrior and  Maratha general in 18th-century Maratha empire.  In 1794, there was only one temple in the premises of the memorial, dedicated to Lord Shiva, built by Mahadji Shinde. He died in the same year and was cremated in the premises. It is one of the most important landmarks of the city and a reminder of Maratha rule

Mahadji Shinde Chhatri memorial was built by his descendants. In 1910, in the memory of Mahadji Shinde. The Maharaja Madho Rao Scindia of Gwalior started the construction of Mahadji Shinde’s memorial. The architect of the monument was Shapoorji N. of Bombay Chandabhoy’s company.

The gwalior’s Scindia is a descendant of Daulat Rao Scindia, the adopted son of Mahadji Shinde. It is maintained by Shinde Devasthan Trust, Gwalior.

About Mahadji Shinde Chhatri

Shrimant Sardar Bahadur Mahadji Shinde was born in 1730 A.D. Father’s name is Ranonji Rao Shinde. Mother’s name was Cheema Bai. Mahadji Shinde was a great warrior who served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Maratha army under the Peshwas from 1760 to 1780.

The Third Battle of Panipat was fought in 1761 AD between Ahmad Shah Abdali and the Marathi army. Maratha army was defeated in this war, many brave Marathi Sardars were killed in this war. The influence of the Maratha Empire was lost. After this war, Mahadji Shinde made a significant contribution in reviving the weakened Maratha power in North India.

In 1771 AD, Shah Alam II was seated on the throne of Delhi, Mahadji Shinde went towards Mathura and annihilated the Jat power there. Along with this, during 1772-73 AD, he ended the power of the Rohils in Rohilkhand. The Najibabad was captured by Mahadji Shinde and Maratha sardar. In 1782 AD, Timur Shah Durrani was defeated. He also defeated the Rajput kings of Jodhpur and Jaipur in the battles of Patan and Merta in 1790 AD.

After the battle of Lakheri, the condition of Mahadji Shinde became critical. He breathed his last on 12 February 1794 at the age of 64 in his camp at wanwadi near Pune. Mahadji Shinde had no heir, after his death, Daulatrao Scindia was declared his successor.

Shinde Chhatri is located at Wanwari, 6 km from Pune Junction. It is one of the most important places in Pune.

This temple is about 4 kilometers away from Pune station.  Taxi, Auto, and local buses are frequently available. If you are coming to visit Pune, then you must visit Dagdu Seth Ganpati Temple.

The temple opens at 6:00 in the morning and closes at 11:00 pm in the night.
